Senior living facility to open in Lowcountry
A new assisted living facility is expected to open next month in Okatie.
Canterfield of Bluffton is being built on 7.25 acres on S.C. 170 by Atlanta-based Medical Development Corp, which describes the project as a luxury senior living campus. The company first broke ground on the facility in late 2015.
The campus will include a three-story assisted living building with 91 apartments and 22 secure memory care units, the company said in a news release.
There also will be nine independent living villas, built as three triplex units, with attached garages.
The site was chosen for its proximity to Interstate 95 and Coastal Carolina Hospital, the release said.
The company said its Canterfield senior living communities use a neighborhood concept. Its neighborhoods are designed to allow residents as much independence as possible with onsite amenities and programs to promote social interaction, the release said.
The assisted living building will include a theater, library, barber/beauty salon, exercise room, arts and crafts room, and fitness room/rehabilitation suite.
“We know it is important not only to have a great building, but also to provide caring, well-trained professional staff,” Medical Development Corp director of development Allen Porter said. “… We are very happy to provide Jasper and Beaufort counties with a new senior living option, and we look forward to opening this Canterfield property and innovative lifestyle to the Bluffton area senior community.”
Medical Development Corp founder Winston A. Porter has developed, owned and managed similar facilities in Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and Florida, the release said. He also has owned several Marriott and Hilton hotel properties and independent upscale dining venues.
“Our intent is to take our knowledge of senior care and integrate it with the lessons learned through our hospitality ventures,” Porter said. “We want to provide our senior residents with a higher level of customer service and amenities, similar to what we execute in our award-winning hotels and restaurants.”
