School district implements staggered bell schedule

The Jasper County School District is implementing a staggered bell schedule for the 2017-2018 school year.

The school board approved the recommendation from Superintendent Donald Andrews at Monday’s regular meeting.

The new schedule will allow elementary students to start at 7:30 a.m. and dismiss at 2:30 p.m.; middle and high students will begin school at 8:30 a.m. and dismiss at 3:45 p.m.

The JCSD said a staggered bell schedule allows extra planning/preparation time for staff and students, shorter school bus runs or less time spent on the school bus and the reduction of the number of school buses and bus drivers needed.

Prior to making the recommendation to the school board, the district conducted several town hall meetings, public forums, and surveys to gather input from parents, students, and staff.

The board of education received the results from the surveys and recommendations before making its decision.

The school year begins Aug. 17.
