UPDATE: Men spotted in Jasper likely not escaped Georgia inmates
Jasper County Sheriff Chris Malphrus said a search for two men matching the description of escaped inmates from Georgia has been called off.
Ricky Dubose, 24, and Donnie Russell Rowe, 43, are accused of killing two guards and stealing a pickup truck. They escaped Tuesday after overpowering the guards on a Baldwin State Prison bus, leading to a nationwide manhunt.
Law enforcement received a 911 call earlier Thursday from a man who said he saw the men at a rest area at mile marker 17 on Interstate 95, according to Malphrus.
However, Malphrus said after speaking to the man directly — and showing him pictures of the suspects — he couldn’t confirm they were the inmates.
“We showed him the pictures and he said they looked similar, but it probably wasn’t them,” Malphrus said.
Malphrus said a maintenance crew on the interstate saw the same two men, but were unable to confirm if they were the inmates.
Malphrus said the original caller is a Georgia resident who thought the men were acting suspicious.
“He was parked in the rest area and saw two guys scoping out cars,” Malphrus said.
The man tried to approach them but they ran, according to Malphrus.
The reward for information leading to their arrest is $130,000, according to Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills.
