Editorial: Summer fun for everyone
The summer is supposed to be a time to relax and enjoy our great weather, but too often in recent weeks we’ve been unnerved by news of our youth being in danger and the prevalence of drugs.
We were stunned to learn that Jasper County Sheriff Chris Malphrus believes there might be 100 drug houses in the county and the Drug Enforcement Administration told him about 80 to 100 kilograms of cocaine makes its way through the county each week.
A kilogram of cocaine is valued at about $25,000. So, each week there’s about $2.5 million in cocaine in the county.
The sheriff made a drug bust last week that netted 85.2 grams of cocaine. Hopefully the crackdown continues.
But the hard news shouldn’t completely overshadow fun events happening around the county.
In Ridgeland, Turpin Park is a great place to enjoy an afternoon. There’s a treehouse, slide, swings and the popular splash station is the perfect spot to cool off. The county’s farmers market on Main Street in Ridgeland from 1 to 6 p.m. on Fridays offers a variety of vendors and its downtown location is walking distance to many of the town’s shops.
The county’s youth flag football league has kicked off. There are games Monday, Thursday and Saturdays through the end of July. Recreation director Johnny Davis said there’s still a few spots open for kids to join. Parents are encouraged to give him a call at 843-784-5136.
Hardeeville recently debuted its farmers market, which is held each Monday behind City Hall from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. It’s a nice spot to enjoy local food and hang out with friends and neighbors.
And Sgt. Jasper Park is a little secret that offers big opportunities for fun. The 321-acre park off Interstate 95 features a disc golf course, biking, fishing, kayaking and canoeing.
A popular feature is the Kids N Kayaks program, which gives children a chance to learn to kayak and paddleboard. The next program is July 20.
There are certainly entertaining activities all around the county. We hope you have a chance to take part in the fun.
Enjoy the rest of the summer.
