Remembering Clementa Pinckney
July 30, 1973 - June 17, 2015
“He’d say, ‘When we leave this life, we go to a better life. There’s a part of an individual that survives the grave and will never die. Those are the memories we have of Clementa Pinckney. We are going to hang on to those memories for a long time. Jasper County was a better place because he was here.”

That Thursday morning was somber after the fatal shootings the night before at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston. The community was in mourning.
But Jasper County gathered together to remember slain Sen. Clementa Pinckney, who rose from Jasper County High School to the Statehouse in Columbia.
Pinckney was one of nine people killed June 17, 2015. The shootings shocked the county and the country.
The Jasper County Sun Times was able to tell the story in Jasper thanks to the gracious people in the community.
This is how we covered the Charleston church shootings of June 17, 2015.
