Faber steps in as RHHS track coach
RHHS’s longtime basketball coach Jeremiah Faber has taken over the job as track coach. He replaces Anthony Elam, also a girls basketball assistant coach and head volleyball coach.
Elam has coached county track teams since 2013.
“The dismissal of Coach Elam was an administration decision made to benefit the structure of our RHHS Track program,” said Jasper County School District Public Information Officer LaShanda Grant in an email to the Jasper County Sun Times.
Elam led five state-competing runners and three state-competing relays.
Faber has coached the boys basketball team for 32 seasons, but he also had stints coaching baseball and track. He volunteered to guide the track team for the remainder of the season.
“They were having problems getting to meets, and there was a lack of consistency in the program. I was asked by Dr. Parker and the assistant coaches to step in,” Faber said. “Track has always been one of our stronger spring sports. The program has been on the decline in the last couple of years. I wanted it to continue to be productive and make sure our kids could participate in quality meets.”
Faber coached track during the late 1980s and early 1990s, starting in 1984 at West Hardeeville. He last coached track in 1993 at Jasper County High. He’s coached or substituted as a coach for all sports at RHHS; he was even the JV football head coach. The only sport he’s not familiar coaching is girls volleyball.
“Our track program used to be one of the most dominant programs in the area – we’ve got some quality kids. It wasn’t working out with the former head coach,” Faber said. “As a coach you’re obligated to be there and you can’t fold the season because things are going well – you’ve got to keep the program going. And that’s what I wanted to do, keep the program going.”
The track team has competed in five meets to date, with two meets remaining: Drug Free Classic (April 15) and Beaufort Championship (April 19).
Then qualifying runners will compete in the Region 8-AAA meet, Lower State meet, and Class AAA state meet, respectively.
