Layman takes softball helm at Spartanburg Methodist
Former Thomas Heyward multisport star Ashlie Layman has been named head softball coach at NJCAA Division I Spartanburg Methodist College.
Layman, who helped lead THA to a state SCISA softball championship in 2011 and a basketball title in 2012, was the Rebels’ varsity volleyball coach and softball assistant last season. She also taught psychology, sports communication, computer applications and speech vocabulary.
Layman played four years for University of South Carolina Beaufort’s softball team. She earned several honors, including Sun Conference Pitcher of the Year her sophomore season. Layman helped lead the Sand Sharks to two conference championships (2013-14). She tossed a perfect game for USCB in 2016.
At Thomas Heyward, Layman was named to SCISA’s all-state softball team as a freshman and sophomore and was named state player of the year after her junior season. Layman won 82 games at THA and struck out 686 batters in 616 innings.
